  1. About a year ago in the Philippines and trust me there are other examples.

  2. Iran is in Asia, but Iraq is considered by most to be in the Middle East.

The UN has worked extensively in Iraq and in all of Asia. In fact, the UN still helps Iraq, but most of the staff works from Jordan, per the bombing of the UN headquarters just after "mission accomplished". Various UN agencies have helped or are helping:

-- East Timor establish its own government (rather than being a part of Indonesia), help with reconciliation efforts there, and help with elections

-- Afghanistan to establish local governments for the first time ever, to mobilize emergency food deliveries following severe weather (the winter this year was particularly extreme), to hold national and local elections, and to gear up for its first census (UNIFEM is the lead on this, actually), among MANY other activities

Various UN agencies are working in Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, all the "stan" countries (Pakistan, Tajikistan, etc.), and many other Asian countries. You can read about this work yourself by visiting the individual UN agency web sites and looking where they have worked in Iraq and Asia, such as:

    UNDP

    UNIFEM

    UNICEF

    UNV

    UNFPA

    WHO

    WFP

    UNEP

    UNESCO
