I'm and trying to find out if it is better to use electricity, heating oil or natural gas for household water heaters and boilers/furnaces. I know heating oil has increased at unreasonable rates. Have the cost of electricity and gas or propane increased at the same rates?

  1. in this area, natural gas and electric rates are very comparable. propane or butane may be somewhat less expensive, but you will have the cost of the fixtures etc....

i think i would look at a natural gas high efficiency unit.

  2. Electricity rates are much more stable than heating oil and natural gas. In fact, from 1986-2006 electricity rates only increased by 1.9% for the nationwide average. Many electricity companies across the nation are rural electric cooperatives that operate as non-profits so they rarely raise rates.

  3. Yes they have increased,However gas appliances last longer than electric(except for gas airconditioners) by a wide margine(when I had electric water heater they only lasted 5   years max). And they are simple to fix(mostly cleaning the pilot hole).
