Has the number of global disasters increased in recent years?

No they are not getting worse or increasing in number due to global warming.  We do have CNN now to tell us about these events that occured on the other side of the world though.  Our population is increasing and we are moving into new areas when we cover more land the probability of a natural disaster effecting some of us goes up.

I would also like to add that the 2006 hurricane season in the U.S. was supposed to be horrible but there were very few hurricanes at all.

I think the number has increased somewhat (I'm looking for figure now) but the severity of the various natural distasters has definately gone up.

I'm looking for the Stats because the media does pray much more on this sort of thing nowadays - so there's a much higher profile when it happens.  This can distort public perception.
