a few weeks ago i downloaded ultimate 1.8. when i booted from the disk, everything went accordin to plan, until that is, i tried to install, i dont use windows so i know it wont be a problem with partitioning, so i am sure its the installer script. when i tried to install the installer just dissapeared. i went lookin at forums, and found someone had the same problem, so i read through, but there was no fix. i have since looked again for forums with the same problem but nothing. oh and its the x86 32bit version, incase you were wondering. and its not a hardware issue, i have 1.7ghz cessor.. and a gig ram. any one had the same problem? and have they fixed it? or have ultimate fixed the installer. i have posted a similar post on the ultimate forums, so i thought i'd ask here aswell. i'm at a loss for answers, so i put iit in your hands now.. lol

  1. Ultimate? Is this some autoscript installer? Please, if so, do not use it. The official and best way to install Ubuntu is to devote a partition to it, use the GUI or Alternate Ubuntu installer, then manually grab whatever you need from Canonical's repositories, using the FAQ and forums for help. While a bit more initial work, you'll have a system that's more stable, less prone to breaking in updates, easier for others to support, and that might only break halfway instead of entirely if you update to the next version when it comes out.

In the future, if you need help with Ubuntu, please ask on their fabulous support forum. They'll get you an answer quicker, and it will probably be a better one than you'll get here, too.

  2. I currently have Ultimate Edition v.1.8 installed on two of my machines & in the course of various dual boot configurations must have installed at least six times. In my opinion there is no major fault with the installer,if indeed any at all.The first thing to bear in mind is that the ISO download is quite large at 1.3GB & a check with the MD5 is essential.Having verified that the download is accurate,we move to the burning process.Again we must ensure that the burn is accurate.I would recommend a burn speed of 4x & certainly no higher than 8x.Having completed & verified the burn we can now move to the actual install. You have stated that your machine has 1GB of RAM,but this is infact fully utilised during the install & should be augmented by Swap.I would recommend that you have a Swap partition of 1GB which will then give a virtual memory of 2GB ie. 1GB physical RAM plus the 1GB of Swap.If you follow this advice the install should go smoothly.Good luck & feel free to email if you still have problems.EDIT: the burn speed I quoted relates to Linux Cds,this is a DVD burn & speed should be 1x (apologies).

  3. i've recently started building a new system, and come up with a number of issues. nothink would install on it.

maybe what would work for you is to update the bios on the motherboard?
