Question:

Has there always been laws of thermodynamics and newton; evolution, and even time?

Not the discovery of the laws, but the law itself. Is there a beginning to these laws and time? Or do they have a beginning at all and have always been available until an event came along (like the BB) that could start it.

For example was there time before the BB? Or time was always there but needed the BB to start it?

Another example would be was there always evolution, but evolution needed life or to start it?

  1. Theyve always been there but of course no-one can prove that because no-one was there!

  2. i believe it all is, always has been and always will be. we just can't get there from here.

  3. I dont think that anyone could answer the question of what was before the bb.  But right after the laws did come in play...to form the first stars and galaxies. Evolution does not need life to start. It starts with one hydrocarbon bonding with others...creating cells...then multi cellular organisams.

  4. As far as is known, the prevailing laws of physics were results of the creation of the universe, and need not necessarily have applied before that, should there have been any 'before' somehow or other prior to the creation of space and time.  Then again, there's no evidence I know of showing they can't have been in operation prior to the beginning.

I'm aware that final sentence is paradoxical, but I don't happen to know how to formulate it more logically.

  5. The laws of thermodynamics have evolved since the Big Bang because the conditions in the universe changed drastically in the first few instants since the Bang (somewhere in the range of 10^-30 to 10^-42 seconds since the Bang.).  Even today, laws of physics change in areas where conditions get extreme such as near black holes, the surfaces of neutron stars and for anything that travels near the speed of light.

I've heard that time did not exist before the Big Bang, and it makes no sense to ask what happened before the Big Bang, just as it makes no sense to ask what is north of the North Pole.

Without time there can be no evolution.  Since time exists, now, so does evolution.  Evolution does not need life to exist.  Planets, galaxies, stars all evolve on their own.
