I've noticed an incredibly bright star since last week that I've never noticed before. Is there known to be a comet in the sky of the Northern Hemisphere at the moment? I'm living in England.

  1. If it is in the east, it must be Jupiter.  In the west are Mars and Saturn.  At the site referenced below, you can see what is currently visible in the sky.

  2. Comets are not stationary, what you were seeing was not a comet but rather a nearby planet.

  3. There is a comet (comet Boattini) that is barely visible in the pre-dawn hours in the northern hemisphere. I do not think that is what you are referring to.

  4. There are currently no bright comets visible from the UK at the moment. I suggest what you saw was Jupiter. Comets are extended objects and do no appear star like.

  5. "shoot for the moon, if you miss you'll still be amongst those stars"

as for the question, dont have a clue

  6. Commet - not sure what that is.  If you mean a "comet", then no.

The bright "star" you see is Jupiter - amazingly enough, it has been there for a few weeks, and will be that bright for another month or so.  And since Earth overtakes Jupiter every 398.9 days as it orbits the Sun, Jupiter appears that bright in our skies every 13-14 months.  Has done since the solar system formed 4 billion years ago.

  7. Its Jupiter, it looks very bright.
