Brett Hextall, son of Ron Hextall, was drafted in the 6th round, 159 overall by Phoenix. I think he is considered a bit of a long shot at this point but given that he is committed to U of North Dakota for next season and seems to have his father's grit, it is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility that he could get to the NHL.

Has there ever been 4 generations from one family to play in the NHL?

  1. No, the Hextalls would be the first, unless there's another Patrick hiding somewhere.

To my knowlege there are only two families with 3 generations to play in the NHL.

    The Patricks (Lester/Lynn & Muzz/Craig & Glenn)

    The Hextalls (Bryan/Bryan Jr. & Dennis/Ron)

    Ooops...Make that 3 families

Howie Morenz's daughter married Bernie Geoffrion whose son Dan Geoffrion also played in the NHL.

  2. What about the Patrick's ??

  3. Howie Morenz is the great grandfather

Boom Boom Geoffrion is the grandfather

    Dan Geoffrion is the father

and Blake Geoffrion was drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2007.  He has accepted an invitation to prospects training camp and is expected to have a place on the roster this fall.  So that makes four NHL generations of hockey players.

  4. Syl Apps III made it to the AHL in 1999 as the third person with that name to play pro hockey at a high level His sister Gillian is one of the foremost women's hockey players of today. As a matter of fact at 5'-11" 175 # she's almost big enough to play with the men.

But Brett Hextall will be the first fourth generation to play in the NHL.

  5. No there has not. The Staals are 4 brothers not 4 generations

  6. i'm not sure.

  7. First of all sharks and pens fan, why would you even post "i'm not sure"???   And no, there has not been 4 generations of one family to play in the NHL, although that could change some day, and would be amazing if that happens. The Sutters had 2 generations drafted.  6 brothers in the late 70's - early 80's and 3 of their sons. Although, none of the sons made it to the NHL yet.  2 of them are playin in the AHL and 1 is playing in the Elite Ice Hockey League in Britain

  8. pretty soon all 4 staal bros are guna have played the nhl
