To all FL and gulf coast nascar residents i hope you are ok through these hurricane storms and your houses and family and you are ok. I am in the fl keys where we usually get all the hurricanes but have been spared recently the last couple of years. Take care and be safe.

  1. I'm not sure. I know a few have had to be moved a day or two.

And to my Gulf Coast friends, Tbone, David G, and any others down there, be safe. My heart goes out to all of you.

  2. I don't know of any cancellations due to rain, but Nascar would always reschedule the race for another time. Jess mentioned 9/11 as an example and I remember the Daytona 1998 July race was postponed till October 17th due to wildfires in the area. The smoke was so thick, they couldn't see from one side of the track to the other.

I'm here in Florida too, although in a much less conspicuous hurricane area than the Keys. (Just north of Tampa) Keep yourself safe, too, Theodora, and thanks for the good thoughts. Everyone up in LA, MS, AL , TX and the panhandle take care.

  3. nascar allways seems to get the race in one way or the other...usually the next or the following day..............back in the day the drivers didnt worry about a little moisture

  4. There have been days long rain delays but I can't think of one that was never raced.  Someone with more knowledge will probably give you a better answer.

You are a special sweetheart Empress.

Not in Florida myself but have family in Sarasota.

  5. Not in this current era, maybe when NASCAR ran on dirt tracks in the 50's & early 60's.

The worst delayed race I remember a few years ago was at MIS (Brooklyn, MI), rain delayed it until Tuesday when they ran the complete race..

  6. in all the years i've watched nascar i've never seen it happen

  7. I don't think so; they've always managed to squeeze them in somewhere.

To all of you in the Gulf Coast area, please take care and stay safe.

  8. Not that I can remember, but their was a race like 20 years ago (Atlanta???) that got canceled because of heavy snowfall.

  9. If it ever did happen it would have been in the early days when what is now NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series ran up to 62 races per year, running 3 nights a week.

  10. Not that I know of.  Sure hope everybody in Gustav's way get missed.  My thoughts and prayers go out to everbody in the area.  God Speed.

  11. the 1973 southeastern 500 was delayed by three weeks or so because of rain. it stands out as it is one of the few races where one person led all the laps - cale yarborough led the first 40 or so laps, then the rains came. they continued on with the season and when the chance came to finish the race, they went back and very quickly yarborough had lapped the field and went on to lead all 500 laps to win.

don't know of any put off longer than that...

  12. I believe there has been, but I can't think of examples.

Normally, NASCAR just delays the race and puts it at a much later date (for example in 2001, New Hampshire's race was cancelled because of September 11th, but instead of just eliminating the race off the season, they made New Hampshire the final race of the season in November.)

  13. Am from the dirt track days and don't recall not getting a race due to rain from those events.  They always reschedule a post-poned race.
