  1. the last one to have won was Winning Colors, DWLukas' horse with Gary Stevens aboard, they beat Risen Star who was the 5/2 favorite by half a length (they were the second choice) and the exacta paid right around 75 dollars as I remember...I caught the exacta...after which 'old school' trainer Woody Stephens said 'I will never let her beat the boys again' sent a 'rabbit' after her so she would run an unreasonable pace on the lead so she couldnt win the Belmont...although she placed 3rd in the Preakness she finished up the track in the Belmont because of the 'rabbit' , this had made Stephens a bit of a villian in racing and the 'old school' guys were slow to fry him , but the press and people in racing knew he was wrong...often there is no mention of this in print, as he was a bit of a hero as a racing trainer...

  2. You can watch Winning Colors' Derby (1988) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykEb2qZ-a...

and Genuine Risk (1980) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpUhy9iyz...

Regret is the third filly who won, way back in 1915, so no video of that one!

  3. winning colors (1988)

& two other has won the kentucky derby as a filly

  4. The Answer:

Just 38 filies have started in the Kentucky Derby and only three have won: Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980) and Winning Colors (1988).

see page for complete list:  http://www.derbypost.com/pastwinners.htm...

  5. You got a lot of great answers Melissa. Here's a little information about fillies running in the Belmont.

If she runs, Rags to Riches would be the first filly to run in the Belmont since Silverbulletday in 1999. Only 21 fillies have ever competed in the Belmont and only Ruthless, in the first Belmont at defunct Jerome Park in 1867 and Tanya on May 24, 1905 -- 20 days after Belmont Park opened for business -- ever won the race.

  6. Yep...  3 fillies have won the Kentucky Derby...  Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980, and Winning Colors in 1988.

You can see Genuine Risk and Winning Colors on you tube...

Genuine Risk won by one length...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpUhy9iyz...

Winning Colors by a half length...

I don't have video of Regret (because it was 1915) but she won by 2 lengths.

Interesting thing about Regret and Winning Colors: they both led wire to wire...  that's pretty rare in any Derby, so to see 2 fillies win like that is pretty cool.

Genuine Risk was a pretty great horse...  she's about the nearest thing to Ruffian that we've had since then...  too bad I wasn't alive in 1980 to see her run either.  Anyway, Genuine Risk won the Derby then went on to run the Preakness and Belmont.  She came in second in both of those races...  but the thing is...  she was the most consistent horse...  she had a first, second and second while Codex (Preakness winner) and Temperance Hill (Belmont winner) didn't even run the Derby and Codex finished 7th in the Belmont...  I couldn't find results for the preakness, so i don't know where Temperance Hill finished (or if he even raced).  Anyway, Genuine Risk was quite a horse.  Check out the videos on you tube.

  7. only 3 have won, and after the triple crown campaign they never returned to top form, but all 3 were on top of the game come that 1st Saturday may.
