Question:

Has this ever happened to you while horseback riding?

I was riding and my horse wasn't listening to me. I was trying to get him away from the jump standard, but he rammed my leg into it, knocking it over and spooking him. I was displaced and fell off and he ran over my leg. Have you had a similar experience with a horse running your leg into a standard?

  1. I horseback ride, and I`ll bet that the horse had flies bothering him. He wasn`t trying to hurt you, just trying to defend himself. One day while I was horseback riding with a friend, our horses` butts got too close and the both of us almost got butted off!

  2. As my old teacher once said to me ... you need to be stronger on the bit.

    Good luck.

  3. One of my old horses always ran my leg into the rail when i was trying to get him to canter. But nothing every happened as serious as what happened to you. In many cases when i fell off the horse ether ran off or stayed by my side but they have never ran over me. Once when I was showing he stopped at the jump and then took it when I wasn't ready and I feel off but the amazing thing was that I hit the other side of the jump before he jumped and when he jumped once he saw me he jumped the other way and put hes head down to make sure he didn't jump on me. If he had not of done that he would have landed right on top of me. I have a video of it and it is so cool how much he cared and watched out for me. Anyway back to your question. Remember to keep your eyes up and use your heels. It will take time since he is green. Try setting up poles and just weave in and out of them like pole bending. First at the walk, then the trot, and lastly the canter.

    I hope I helped

  4. No but I have been rammed into a post in the same way - it really hurts.

Try putting your whip over to the side he's running out through - it might help.

  5. yes i have but it didn't end up as bad as your leg i hope it wasn't permanently injured  when it happened to me i barely knock the standard over. when i was training my old Small pony he would run my leg against the wall. i aways kept my crop on the side of the wall so he new that he would get a tap if he started scraping me on purpose. u no how ponies are. the crop idea worked for me i would try that if your horse does that consistently

  6. I had a 17+ hh draft cross slam me sideways into a tree and then he leaned on me; it felt like someone had snapped my pelvis in half. It was so painful, I'm getting a flash of pain just thinking about it and it happened more than 25 years ago!

Either the horse you are riding doesn't know better (hasn't been taught to give the rider space) or he's being very rude and disrespectful.

Ouch, ran over your leg, too :(

  12. im so sorry to hear that. we all have our day! as a matter of fact, just a couple of weeks ago my pony ran me into adjacent standards! there was a jump one diagonal of the ring. with a jump on the other diagonal spaced about a meter across from the other standard... well she was in one of her moods that day and decided to refuse it and took us right through the two standards!... luckily, my half chaps saved my legs.
