  1. The laptop automatically changes the resolution so that you can play the game. Then it will return the screen to the settings that was there before. You might have to change the settings back manually by right clicking in a (space) on the desktop then click (graphics properties), (display settings) then (choose a resolution) that suits you.

  2. Usually poorly written games change the screen resolution and then don't revert it back to what it was originally set at. To change it back, open the start menu, click Control Panel on right, on the right under Appearance and Personalization click "Adjust screen resolution", then in that window, under where it says "Resolution:" drag the slider all the way to the right for optimum viewing resolution. Then click "Ok" and close out of the Control Panel.

  3. Did you try restarting?

What do you mean by wide and oversized? Is the background suddenly way too large to be contained by the monitor? Is the start button suddenly 100x bigger? If so, it sounds like after the game closed the resolution didn't go back to normal. You can right click on the desktop, go to properties, and then settings and set your resolution back to normal.
