Question:

Has this happened to you with your doctors office?

My husband and I just found out that we are expecting our 2nd child and we are thrilled. I called my doctors office to set up my first appointment and to get a prescription for pre-natal vitamins when the receptionist told me that my doctor won't see me this soon. She informed me that I have to wait 6 weeks after finding out about it before I could get an appointment. I didn't have to wait the first time.. so now this sounds a little crazy to me. Has anyone else had to wait for their first appointment? And shouldn't I be taking vitamins as soon as I know I'm pregnant? I'm confused...

  1. i dunno about the doctor part but you dont need a perscription for prenatal vitamins you can get those at any drug store over the counter so start those while you are waiting

  2. 2 weeks is the most you have to wait if you are a new patient of the office. I don't know why you would ever have to wait that long seeing as you are their patient already.  You could make an apt with another office to get one sooner and if  you still want to stick with them keep their apt. This way you at least get seen sooner.

  3. My first prenatal appointment was at 7 weeks. Prenatals can be obtained at any drug store

  4. It's not strange or unusual. They had me wait til I was 8 weeks along to see me.  They want to wait to see you mainly because of the risk of miscarriage very early in pregnancy, and I think it's kindof mean that they don't want to meet with a woman if she's not going to be carrying the baby til term.   They're sending the message that those women aren't worth their time, in my opinion. Some doctors won't even see women before 12 weeks, because that's when the risk of miscarriage goes very low. Rude, they are!

I think they should meet with women as soon as they are pregnant to quell any worries and answer any questions they have about anything, especially questions about medications.  But, sometimes what we think and what the world actually is -- is slightly different.

You should be taking the vitamins now, yep!

You could get the nurse or doctor to call in a script for you or just go buy prenatal vitamins at any drug store, GNC, or Walmart.

  5. yes keep taking the vitamins, and my midwife wouldnt see me until i was 8 weeks pregnant, (i was 4 when i discovered)

  6. Yes i found out i was pregnant  in may and didn't see my doctor until june 18 of 07

  7. Same thing happened to me.. they told me that first available appointment is after 21 day.. I was disappointed as I already had my first baby there still did not get early appointment..

sometime I don't understand this system..

  8. The appt is correct. There is no point in seeing you before 6-8 weeks. Most wont even take you until 8-12 weeks along because there isnt much there yet! They should have given you a perscription tho! I would call back and ask to speak to your dr about it!

  9. not sure how things are run in your neck of the woods persae, but to answer your question about the prenatels.. irs always a good idea to start right away.. it wont hurt to get a head start. as for where i live, my OB see's people mostly when they are 8 weeks prego. i went in when i was 6 weeks, b/c i didnt know actually when my last period  was and so with that, she did an ultrasound at 6 weeks.. nothing much on the screen, but a tiny dot, but it showed i was 6 weeks 1 day along.. i am now 22 weeks prego..  if you are wondering about the change from your last pregnacy at the docs office than now, call them to get a clarrification. GOOD LUCK

  10. u can get prenatals over the counter.  i don't know the answers to your other question because i have never been pregnant.

  11. You can pick up prenatals at Walmart without a prescription.  I think most doctors wait until you're around 8 weeks before wanting to see you.  I had my first appt when I was 8 weeks along.

  12. I think that any responsible Doctor would meet with any pregnant woman to talk about safe and healthy pregnancies, but perhaps if you just became pregnant, your doctor wants to wait to give the medication until you are a bit further along. I say, though, that they won't meet with you until six weeks doesn't sound right.

  13. I found out at 5 weeks and didn't have my first apt until 4 weeks after that, a lot of doctors do it. I don't know why, but they do.

  14. u dont have to have a prescription for your pre-natal vitamins!!! There are some at walmart or n e store you can go and get them! I had to wait till i was 8 weeks before the doc. would see me, but even still i got my own pre-natal vitamins.

  15. Yes I believe you should be taking the vitamins.  I would call back and maybe see if a nurse can call in a prescription for you.  But as far as the wait.  I had to wait 2 weeks after I knew I was pregnant.  They like you to be 6-8 weeks pregnant.  A lot of people find out as early as 4 weeks.  Which was me, because when I did go in for my appt I had a sonogram and it showed me at 6 weeks 1 day.

  16. Yep, I found out and had to go in to the office for them to confirm it, but didn't see the dr until I was 11 weeks pregnant.

  17. Where I am, they won't see you until at least 8 weeks; it's very common for docs to wait... I never wanted to go early, anyway, so it was no prob for me. I always went after 12 weeks. (But, I eat very healthy, and you can take prenatals from the store.)

  18. You can buy a bottle of prenatal pills at walmart for $6. That will last you 6 weeks till your appointment.

The doctor doesn't need to see you ASAP. Usually they don't see women till the 3rd month if you aren't high risk.

If you want to get in sooner, talk to your doctor personally. If you have a good relationship with your doctor they will usually do favors for you.
