Question:

Has women's tennis become a joke?

For the most part of the year, the top women in tennis have been injured and pulling out of tournaments left and right. Being so close to the US Open, none of the big name players have yet to make a statement. I wonder if any of them are really serious about winning the last slam of the year.

Women's tennis has finally gotten more TV coverage this, but i'm sure some viewers don't wanna see a Wozniak/Bartoli or Safina/Pennetta final, in what's supposed to be a TOP level tournament. With that said, all the injuries, withdrawals, and lack of high quality matches have made women's tennis seem like a joke.

I was no Henin fan, but I'm really starting to miss her. At least she could play a full schedule and keep her consistency.

  1. IS not a joke. Go to your bed, is too early for you.

I like Justine, she is wonderful, but she make her decision. I like your Maria, Serena and other girls from America. I think it is not a bad thing, women's tennis is still very exciting.

  2. Yes I have to agree with you. People simply dont want to see such a final. Female tennis is all about Grandslams now a days The other top tournaments have become quite Boring. Henin was very good at beating my favourites but yes I am also missing her. People want to see great finals and great competition and I guess Female tennis has been missing it since Henin's retirement

  3. Women's tennis has always been a joke, sure they are decent athletes, but tennis is boring enough, why would you want to watch a less good version of guys play?

  4. I was wondering why everyone was pulling out...but i never thought of it as a JOKE>..

  5. Key point is injuries. If not for so many injuries, the womens tour would be even more interesting these days. At same time though, and because of injuries, to have Jankovic playing for top ranking, and having yet to be in a slam final, let alone win one, its crazy. Excluding injuries to the top players, especially, Jankovic would be ranked around 7th if not for playing a ton of tournaments. Im not saying she isnt talented, but rather her ranking is due to playing way too much and with her piers not playing often enough.

  6. EXCUSE ME?

  7. Yes this has to be given a thought. Look at the top players' results yesterday. Both Ivanovic and Sharapova had to struggle through their matches, which went to three sets. You cannot say that these players can breeze through the early rounds of tournaments like Henin and Clijsters did consistently. It is a whole lot more likely that Sharapova and Ivanovic get knocked out early in tournments simply because they don't have consistency.

  8. i completely agree has well.. justine henin has started a downward trend.... with her out, justine could have still done well, a fool she is for leaving...  and amelia mauresmo not playing well, she was also a complete player.. nobody on tour has the game variety and skill set they had...

i am sure most women players are serious, but they are of not the same calibre.. this also gives the willam sisters a better chance of dominating... or somewhat..

  9. Its not a joke but I see where you are coming from. Its mediocre. Justine Henin was shoulders above the rest. We have seen brilliant players like Clijsters(retired young) Mauresmo(lost form) and the likes of Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Myskina, Mary Pierce injured or banned(or pregnant) 0h and ofcourse Monica Seles

I keep saying this but back in 2004 The Williams sisters were deadly and commited for the full schedule, We had the Belgians, Davenport, Capriati aswell as the emergance of the Eastern Europeans and in particalar the Russians. Only 4 years ago Womens tennis looked so promising and some even went as far as to say it was better or more entertaining than mens tennis.

Now look at it. Jankovic is nothing special and is about to be world no.1 and hasn't won a Grand Slam! If consistancy by itself is good enough to be the best then God help us.

I think of the top players only Kuznetsova has the game to be at the top but what lets her down is between the ears.

What we need is a new star. Someone who is a tennis player and not a fashion designer and a celebrity.

Please Justine and Kim-Come back!!!! These two if commited once again would easily be one and two in the world again.

Hopefully its just a transition faze. There are lots of very young players like Vaidisova ,Szsay and Wosniaki just to name a few. But none of them really look 'Wow' like Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters or Monica Seles did.

  10. well..all the big names have won the last 3 slams this year. I like Safina and she's coming into her own.  All the top players are getting older except for Sharapova and that's why they get injured and can't risk further injuries.

I don't think it's a joke. It's just a time in tennis where the great ones are getting older and besides Ivanovic and Jankovic, there haven't really been an upcoming tennis players that have stepped up.

  11. I completely agree, ever since Henin retired woman`s tennis has went downhill. Who knows whats going to happen but it certainly isnt very entertaining at the moment.

  12. well i was a big henin fan and i think the womens tour has actually been a big joke this year.

i thought that even after her retirement tennis was not short of people but the top players have been performing below par and my other favourite jankovic has really disappointed me.

i just hope the game catches up and we get to see a good tight grand slam final instead of the straight set victories we have got used to seeing in the grand slam finals.

  13. No.  Women's is way more interesting at the moment.

Almost any of the girls in the top 15 could potentially take out a grand slam, and there's no way of knowing who or when.

Look what happened to Sharapova at Wimbledon

The girl that beat her is no slug, and that was no lucky win.
