I have a seven year old son, who will be repeating the first grade. The teacher said that he has a come a long way since the start of the year and he could move to second grade, but would be better off perfecting the skills that he is a little slow on. I have no problem with having him repeat the first grade, and the teacher left the final decision up to us. He will be staying in her class again next year because she really thinks that he can become a leader in her class and do a ton for his confidence. which makes me feel good that she isn't trying to pawn him off on another teacher. I repeated kindergarted but can't remember any problems from it.. One of the mothers said that my child will be made fun of on the bus and playground because he was left behind while they all moved up. I personal think that it won't be that big of deal and only what it is truly best for my child. Do you know of any children who were truly made fun of? We live in a really small community.

  2. oh i've been there ..  i am raising my grandgtr who is 8  (2nd grade)  she attended headstart , full day kindergrten , and first grade .. each year she was in something , someone close to her passed away .. she wasn't able to grasp the basics.. so i decided to hold her back in first grade for a second year.. she thrived the second year... i impressed upon her that the children who went on , worked hard and didn't go thru what she did .... she lost my husband and both of my parents.... she made new friends and never did we hear a word from any of the children who left her behind .. this year in second grade, she has had some minor difficulties but we have been diagnosed with scoliosis and now she will need a brace that will change her life again .. kids that age are alot more flexible than we give them credit for... they adjust and don't worry about the playground or the bus unless he says something .... he will have new friends and he will thrive also .. sometimes they just need a little jumpstart, they click in and take off... mine did not have the same teacher but our system requires information be passed on teacher to teacher regarding history ... she has been very happy this year in second grade and can't wait for 3rd,,,,,, good luck
