  1. Yes, I have seen this done (and helped do it) countless times.  Yes, to kalua a pig takes a lot of teamwork and time, but it is worth every minute of it.  There is no way you can duplicate the flavor of kalua pig.  I have to say though that I have never seen anyone (Hawaiian, Polynesian or otherwise dig a imu pit in the sand..just would not work).  Here is how it is done...

  2. a lot of work if you're not in hawaii, or somewhere the ground is mostly sand.  if you are then kailua pig is the way to go.

  3. yes i have...it takes a long time and you need to cover it well with moist blankets and bananna leaves so no dirt gets to the pork. it is very tasty but i would not attempt this

i have seen small pigs roasted whole in the oven or a bbq pit

  4. have been to plenty of pig roast.....it is ALOT of work.....and takes a long time to do....the party is usually a good one but I have never tasted a hog that was good prepared this way....so I say no it is not worth it....just have a barbecue....

  5. Yes, that's often done in the islands such as Hawaii.  They like to do it right down on the beach by the ocean.  It is not worth all the extra work, in my humble opinion...I found that roasting a pig over an above-ground fire is every bit as tasty for less than half the labor...and yes, I've had both.

  6. It takes at least 8 hours. I agree with the others on this one; use a rotisserie or the barbecue unless you've got nothing but time on your hands.
