Question:

Has your baby ever gagged to the point of vomiting while eating solids?

My son is starting to gain interest in solids. He doesn't want to be fed, only self-fed.. which is of course okay (or typically). He takes small bites and chews really well, but always gags and winds up vomiting when he eats. I know a little bit of gagging is normal from time to time, but he does it every time (and the food is wet and squishy). And he doesn't just spit up a little... vomit literally shoots out of his mouth in a few bursts. I am not trying to be dramatic, but I am at a loss. I would feel bad to not let him have food now that he wants it, but vomiting daily just doesn't sound normal to me. Has this ever happened to you or do you have any suggestions?

  1. How old is baby?

In all honesty, it sounds like he's not ready for solids.  His gag reflex is still very strong and that's what's causing him to vomit.  Vomiting is the last defense that babies naturally have to keep things from getting in their throats/tummies before they're ready.

  2. When we started giving my son things other than purees (which wasn't for a few more months - probably at least 9 months), he definitely had problems with some goods.  Anything that was lumpier than he expected was likely to cause him to gag and then throw up (although all in one burst, and not projectile-like).  Sounds like your son isn't ready for some of the foods he wants to eat, poor thing!  If he's been gaining weight and growing well otherwise, then I would just ask the doctor about it at the next visit.  If he appears to be losing weight (or rather, not gaining as much as expected), then it might calm you to check in sooner.
