I have a daughter that is 15 1/2 mons.old, and she has kind of long hair, for the past week she has been teething really bad, she has already gotten 3 teeth this week, anyway she has always twirled her hair around her finger, but she has started pulling her hair OUT!! Any suggestions on what I can do to stop her? Thanks

  1. I just read a bunch on the internet about kids that pull out their hair and eat it.

Make sure she's not eating it.

  2. it's called trichotillomania and is a compulsive behaviour - she's doing it to satisfy some inner impetus.

does OCD run in your family, by any chance?

    here's a page about it - it's frightfully common, apparently - http://psychcentral.com/lib/2006/compuls...

  3. i saw this happen to one of the children that came to my daycare.

we found it best to make sure that she had something else to play with and to keep her hands busy because it just gets worse as it becomes more and more of a subconscious habit.

why not try giving her a blanket or a doll to carry around with her that she can play with in her hands and i think that putting her hair up as much as possible to eliminate temptation would be a good idea if it is an option.

also make sure to keep an eye out when she's falling asleep or when she is watching tv (or doing any activity where her hands are free)

  4. Well, This sounds exactly like the same thing my sister is going through with her daughter. She is teething and the poor little thing is just hurting :( She is hurting so bad she is pulling her hair out in her sleep. The only thing I could think of to tell her is to put her hair up in a pony tail. I hope that little baby gets done teething real soon!!! ♥

  5. My friend used to do this when she was little, and it became a problem with her even when she was like 4 or 5 years old. Her mom had to keep her head shaved.

  6. Tie it back in a ponytail!
