Question:

Has your dog ever had a kidney/bladder infection?

My dog (14 years old) has urinated on the floor several times today. I have taken him outside to do his business at least 3 times today and for reasonable amounts of time.

He seems to lift his leg for a long time but doesn't potty much. I just noticed this over the last couple of days. He did not start urinated on the floor indoors until today. I haven't noticed him drinking much water.

I'm not sure what to think because this all coincides with me going back to school and leaving every day for the past week. Sometimes he will urinate on the floor for spite because he's mad that I left him home. He has been that way his entire life.

My question is - has your dog ever had an infection and did anything I described in the first couple of paragraphs sound familiar?

I need to get him to the vet to be sure, but I just wanted some opinions.

Thanks for your help.

  1. Could be UTI or kidney stones.

And dogs and cats do urinate as a method of emotional response. I've had them do so after a lengthy walk when my wife and I are getting ready to leave for dinner together.

Same thing as a dog going stir crazy in a house or apartment and tearing up the curtains when their owner is gone.

Spite doesn't mean cognisant hate, but can mean, "I feel neglected and want any attention I can get."

  2. Sounds like a UTI. It's NOT spite by any means, dogs don't think that way. Older dogs can be prone to urinary tract infections, but I'm more concerned about the lack of water intake. That can be signs of a kidney problem as well.

I know your schedule may seem busy, but your old man deserves the attention of a vet as a priority right now.

  3. yes, it definitely sounds like he has a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or other infection.

I know you think your dog pee's inside for spite, but dogs do not think in the way humans do.  They do not act out of spite.

Good luck, hope he feels better soon.

ADD:  You're right.  Animals are much smarter - they are smarter than humans because they do not spite.  Really, they don't.
