  1. do they have notices up saying 'whites not welcome after 8pm'?

or white christians told to stop handing out literature or they might get beaten up (by a so called community policeman)?

that is what i call a racist area and this is happening in part of birmingham UK and nothing is being done about it

this is the area where there have been arrests and convictions for terrorist activities

i'd say that is far worse than hastings

  2. The previous "answers" show how the problems get mixed up.

We're not talking about asylum seekers here. In Hastings foreign STUDENTS get routinely beaten up and it's been the case for years.

It happens to French, German, Arab-looking people.

Hastings has pockets of xenophobia that are absolutely unacceptable for any town, especially one that size. Are you guys aware of how bad it looks to the rest of, nevermind the country, but Europe?

It's disheartening to read interviews about ongoing episode of violence against those wealthy students who bring money into the local economy...and have the local chavs reply that they don't want asylum seekers. Can someone explain what the connection is???? Hello???

There's an article on the subject that I find very interesting on a Birmingham-based blog called Hagley Road to Ladywood:

  3. The attack on the student was appalling, it's happened before to foreign students, not because of colour, but because they're foreign students, but it's not common. Hastings has racists, like any town, it also has a large population of refugees and asylum seekers. When it comes to trouble, gangs of immigrants can be just as bad as gangs of locals. This year, before the local elections, the BNP was very active in certain areas of the town and things did get worse for a while. I know the town quite well.

Edit: It seems I'm implying there are lots of gangs, there isn't, there are however some rough areas like most places, Hastings proper, where the old town and fishing fleet is, is very quiet and safe.
