Hate Flying On Airplanes??

I go on an airplane every year to go to Texas and always have massive nerves. I'm always worried they are gonna crash, or terrorists are going to drive our plane, I get so sick to my stomach I throw up even sometimes, what are some things to calm down before a flight?

  1. I'd like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it's hard to understand why people don't stay home.

Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere - anywhere but home.

  2. I don't know if your ears bother you at all, but when I use to fly alot I would take a decongestant at least 1/2 to an 1 hour before the flight.  I would chew gum during taking off and landing.  Ginger is really soothing for the stomach; I suggest going to a health food store and buying some crystallized ginger and eating a little bit of it on the flight.  As far as your nerves go, I would suggest praying, meditating, and/or  taking a few deep breaths with your anxiety.  Hope that helps.

  3. i take dramamine to make sure i don't get sick and i close my eyes during the take off and landing. i flew from rome to la by myself [15 hour journey], and as you know, 1/2 of that journey is across the atlantic ocean. to keep myself distracted i brought my ipod, a book, magazines, and watched movies that they had [on the back of each seat, there was a tv]. don't look out the window if you're afraid and try and take a nap. eveything will be fine. :)

  4. you sound just like me exceot i don't puke. i hate the feeling of take off and landing and plus the thought of them crashing. i hate turbulence. im paranoid teorrists will hijack the plane too. ok this is gonna sound so racist [im not racist at all] but i make sure no middle eastern men are on the plane and if there are none then my thoughts of hijacks go away.[it's only because 9/11 along with the paranoia of being hijacked] also there's nothing you can really do about take off and landing because if you close your eyes you can still feel it. when im in the air i listen to music on my zune and stare out at the beautiful scenery of clouds and sky. i don't think of any of my paranoias and i'm fine.

  5. i will pray for u

  6. everybody has fears, but honestly you need to think positive! Get some Valium from your doctor, it really calms your nerves, and you probably couldn't get worked up if you tried. Security is tighter now than ever before, so a terrorist taken over a plane seems so unlikely. They take away your shampoo and any liquids over a certain amount, its becoming a bit of a hassle to travel, and if a plane was to get taken over, I doubt it would be one going to Texas. I feel home from NYC to LAX a week after Sept. 11th and I was fine. Plane crashes do happen, but its not something you hear of happening everyday. Say a prayer, pop a pill and do fine, no use in stressing over anything you can't change anyway. Good luck! I fly a few times a year for many years now... I am still alive and kickin!

  7. you sound young hon, so maybe jus take a benadryl or 2 before take off, like a 1/2 hour prior to boarding. good luck.

  8. I also am very fearful of flying - you're lucky you only have to do it once a year.

I went to a psychologist for my problem and she recommended parasympathetic breathing which really helps. Basically, you want to breath as slowly as possible (count to 10 as you breath in and out).  This slow breathing prevents you from having a panic attack because people who panic hyperventilate - it's therefore impossible to panic if you are controlling your breath.  You can look online for more info - it really helps.  Plus, if you are focused on counting your breaths, you cannot focus on your fears.

You should start your breathing before you even get to the airport to calm your nerves and do it at regular intervals throughout the day you need to fly and then during take-off, turbulence and landing.

In addition to the breathing, i like to take a xanax before take-off.  the combination of the two really helps to calm me down.
