Hate Salad/School Try everything at least once rule?

When I was in elementary school, the school had this rule that you had to try everything at least once even if you thought you didn't like it. I remember being made to eat salad which made me sick to my stomach. I've hated it every since then and can't even smell it without feeling a bit off.

Two questions

Do some some schools still have that rule?

And how can I make myself try something that I don't like as I want to start eating healthy and lose a little weight? the same goes with real yougurt....I can only eat that kind that soft and tastes like ice cream.

  1. Start small - like cut up vegetables (carrots, cukes, tomatoes, etc.) dipped in ranch dressing

Then try it as a whole salad as you get to like that. You can then try different dressings, toppings, etc.

  2. For your issue with eating things that don't appeal to you so much, start small. With the yogurt, buy a larger container of plain yogurt, so you can choose if you'd like to mix in fruit or not. You can choose the amount that way, start small and work your way up to a full serving of it.

As for the school rule, I doubt schools have that rule anymore. People have gotten way too soft. When I was in school you ate what was on your plate. IF you got up to get more of something, you sat in the cafeteria until you ate it. Now that my kids are in school, they don't have to eat everything on their plates in school. They're attending the same school I did as a kid too. But I make them try things, even if they say they won't like it. My youngest just started kindergarten and she expected me to pack a lunch for her most days. I told her she had to try a month of lunches, see if she likes everything on the menu and if there's something she completely HATES, I'll pack her a lunch on those days only. The school food is plenty nutritious for kids these days, there's no reason to pack a lunch.

    That's my thoughts on it.

  3. I don't eat salad, you can say I am a meatatrian

  4. No, schools can't force a child to eat a new food. If anything there are probably rules against that now since kids are allergic to everything.

You don't have to eat salad to lose weight. There are tons of low calorie vegetables you can eat. Try eating baked chicken rubbed with spices. A chicken breast is below 200 calories and filling.

  5. Doctors recommend that you try foods 14 times before saying that you don't like them.  I know!  Seems like a LOT of times trying, but that's what the medical field recommends.  Best wishes!

  6. I know the school's around us don't do that, if you say you don't like it, they give you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to eat. I know at my home, my mother always made us take a no thank you bite. To help you lose weight, try not eating a lot of breads, potatoes, and pasta's. That will make you lose tons of weight.

  7. I never heard anything so ridiculous, I'm glad our school never had that rule.  I know it's good to try new things, but people have certain foods they just KNOW they don't like.  For me it's tomatoes and mayo by itself.  If there's something you don't like, find a different version of it or just try other new things all together.  For yogurt, my mom never thought we'd like it as kids so she never bought it.  I tried the kind with fruit on the bottom or mixed in, and I loved it!  They even have vanilla yogurt, it tastes more like a dessert than regular yogurt.  You can buy plain yogurt too and dress it up with some sweet fresh fruit, like strawberries.  If you don't care for plain 'healthy' food, try adding other healthy things to it to make it easier to eat.  For example, if you don't care for plain apples, cut one up and spread a little peanut butter on each slice.  Or for fresh veggies, use a little bit of low fat veggie dip.  There are many different varieties nowadays.  Even things like the 'baked' versions of chips are healthier than the original versions, if not tastier too.  Making changes like eating 100% whole wheat bread as opposed to white bread, even once in awhile, can help too.  Don't force yourself to eat things you don't really like, just adjust the things you do like so they are healthier.
