When I was a kid I thought she was the whole movie. She was so funny I didn't want the movie to end. Did you enjoy her to?

  1. what movie was she in?  i have not heard of her

  2. I don't remember  Hattie McDaniel,  Wish I did my moms name     was Hattie, and I wished I would of named our daughter after her Edit now I really wished I would of name her Hattie My daughters favorite movie

  3. Oh, yes. She was wonderful and so believable. You felt as though you knew her and she made the character come alive. Tremendous talent.

  4. Yes, I know who Hattie McDaniel is. Now I have to admit I avoided watching GWTW for many years because of negative things I'd hear my mother and other older black women say...but one year I worked at a video store, and they showed the movie in the store...and I totally got into it! Actually purchased the movie and took it home. I love how sassy Hattie was in this movie...and I think she did darn well for the times!

But she has a lot to be commended for...

She is the first Black woman to win an Oscar.  She opened the door for many black actors and actresses. An amazing and strong black woman...despite the roles she got stuck playing at times.  Once when the NAACP criticized her for taking maid's roles, she retorted, "I'd rather play a maid and make $700 a week than be one for $7."  Turned out she was successful enough in her career that she could afford to purchase a 17 room mansion in a white Los Angeles neighborhood, and she not only had a maid, but also a butler and a chauffeur, and that's saying a LOT for a black woman for the 1940s!

But they say she never got stuck up...nor forgot her old friends...and was as "sassy" in real life as in the movies! According to the biography Hattie McDaniel, Black Ambitions, White Hollywood:  She'd have a Christmas Party every year, and Clark Gable always came to the party!  Anyway, someone once told Hattie something like how since she was moving up in the world, she needed to eliminate the riff raff and Hattie supposedly said "Yes, and I'll start with eliminating you!" lol...

Anyway, I saw her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this year...was pretty cool!

  5. Yes.  I remember her from Gone With The Wind. Another movie I liked was when she had to pretend she was the hired help.  I think Katherine Hepburn was in this movie, just can't remember the name.  Anyway, she was really funny.

  6. hi . i just plain out and out liked the whole movie , but she was a character in that . great job she did , in a time that black actors were not recognized .   take care . d.

  7. A fine actress.

  8. I don't know who Hattie Daniels is/was.

Is it possible you're referring to Hattie McDaniel? She played Mammy in "Gone With The Wind" and was the first African American to win an Academy Award.

  9. She was a fine actress, so good in GWTW.  She was the moral compass in that film.Too bad she had to spend her career playing maids and menials.

Yahoo sure has been putting stuff in weird categories.

  10. I remember Hattie McDaniel's very well but not from a movie . I remember sitting by the radio listening to her as Beulah on the radio show of the same name. I can still hear the announcer's voice saying ,"You have been listening to the Beulah show starring Hattie McDaniel's as Beulah".
