Hatton Promotions: Darren Barker and Martin Murray will not fight – Boxing news
Eddie Hearn, Darren Barker’s and manager of Matchroom Boxing, has ended talks regarding the possibilities of a bout between the Darren Barker and the current British and Commonwealth middleweight titleholder, Martin Murray.
The news appalled Murray and his promotional agency, Hatton Promotions, since the bout was being considered as the most happening fight of 2012.
Ricky Hatton of Hatton Promotions, said, “I am not privy to what Darren earned when he fought Sergio Martinez last year, but I think our offer may have topped it or at worse been very close. Put it this way, it was a huge amount for somebody challenging
for British and Commonwealth championship crowns. Eddie Hearn initially made an offer for Matchroom Boxing to stage the fight, which we bettered by a considerable amount.”
He added that it was on Tuesday night when Eddie got in touch with Hatton Promotions’ Director of Boxing, Richard Poxon, to decline the offer saying that he is inches close to get his fighter a world title bout possibly in May.
Furthermore, he said that if Darren Barker is getting the world title then the cash being offered to him by Hatton Promotions is justified, and that this offer by Hatton Promotions is a real one and not something that will not materialise.
Praising Darren’s skills and courage, he said that he is quite sure of the fact that Darren himself is not terror-stricken when it comes to fighting Murray, but he cannot say the same for his other team members. He then said that he wishes and hopes that
notion of his is proved to be wrong by Eddie.
Going back to the possible bout between Martin and Darren, he asserted that his intentions have always been to work for the betterment of his fighters and that he believes Sky Sports and boxing fans around the world would want to watch a highly competitive
match between Martin and Darren.
Lastly, for Martin Murray, he said he is quite confident that 2012 will be a grand year for him and that he will go on to fight some of the major players of the industry.
After this shocking news, Hatton Promotions is unsure of what is next, but it seems like they are still counting on Darren’s return.
