  1. It really depends on the reason you've changed your mind.

For instance, if this is your first job and you're realizing/worrying that an employer will "own" you, that's a common concern. Generally, it's not nearly that bad. People who find they can't tolerate that situation then try to start businesses themselves, so that they're their own boss.

However, if you've gotten an inside look at the company and it's way more restrictive than you'd feel comfortable with, and not what you were first told about, that's a different matter. In that case, it doesn't sound like a good fit.

I haven't exactly been in that position. But in my first summer jobs, I worked for the federal government and had a low level security clearance. I mostly worked with retired military and CIA officers, so there was an additional level of expectation. There were a whole bunch of things I could and couldn't do. So I went into that situation knowing the terms and conditions (well, most of them, anyway), and it wasn't that bad. They were fair but tough. And they were pretty intelligent. (Fair is important. So is intelligence.)

The worst places to work at is where you have an irrational boss. Where fairness and competence doesn't count. And/or where your boss is unethical or stupid. Where I work now is excellent. But I've worked at places where the boss probably was certifiably paranoid. Not a good thing. And another place where my boss was unethical (using lots of company items for her personal use) and, ahem, not too bright.

Look for fairness. Look for challenges. Look for intelligent bosses and co-workers. Look for opportunities to learn and, hopefully, to advance. Look for an industry leader embodying those other qualities. Those are really what makes a good employer.

And working for a good employer is a two-way street. Sure, they expect hard work in return for a salary. But in addition to a fair salary, you'll be learning a lot, growing both personally and professionally.

Avoid arbitrary bosses. Avoid lazy bosses or co-workers. Avoid unethical situations or places of employment.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Trust your gut feeling....but first, get the offer and then worry about it.

  3. I've had a similar situation where I actually accepted the job.  It didn't take long for me to start hating getting up and going to work in the morning.  My best advice is to know what they expect and know if their terms are acceptable to you.  If not don't take the position.  You'll just be looking for another job soon if you do.
