Have 2 young Boer goats. Is blackberries enough?

I was told not to feed them and let them graze on the dry grass, thistle, and blackberries in our field. Is this enough? We got them to clear the field but I also want them to be healthy.

  1. As long as they are not does in milk, they should be fine provided there is enough for them to browse on.  Keep an eye on the field & once it starts getting chewed down, give them hay as well.

If you have any does in milk, they most likely will need at least a little grain to keep them from getting too thin, but not always.  I have very lush pastures & my girls stay fat & sassy with no supplementing at all during the summer.

I would say, just watch the amount of browse they have in the field, and keep an eye on their weight.  As long as there is plenty available, and they are holding their weight, there is no need to give them any extra.  Do make sure they always have clean water, goat minerals, and salt available at all times.

**To lovepinkel:  Never feed goats chicken feed!  There are additives in chicken feed that are very bad for them.  Horse feed is OK, but only in small amounts.  If you are feeding your goat grain on a regular basis, your best option is to get goat feed.

  2. I think you need to go to your local feed store. If you have chickens, you can feed the goats chicken scratch. Or horse food.

  3. they definately need grains.  If you have a farm bureau or tractor supply near they have pamphlets on goat care

  4. feed them a little grain livestock feed works this willl help them get all their nutrients
