Have Hoover SteamVac Model F5835-900.

Have Hoover SteamVac Model F5835-900. Has gunk under the front clear hood where water/debris is lifted from carpet to the tank. Wife wants me to remove clear hood to clean; however the hood cannot come off without damage.Can I safely remove this hood?
