Have I got the right to use real newspaper articles/stories in a short film?

it's a short film with a young girl talking about things happening in the news and she has articles stuck up on her bedroom walls. I was just wondering if I'm allowed to use real headlines or names such as "Maddie gets kidnapped" but not really twisting the story.

Or do I have to make up my own newspaper (but brand won't be shown, nor will logo of the newspaper)

Or should I just change the names of the people involved in the news story and the names of locations?

  1. ya

  2. Headlines can't be copyrighted, so if that's all you can read of the article, it's fine. If she reads any part of the article verbatim, you should have her say something like "The Gotham Daily News says..."

  3. If the newspaper that published the articles isn't copyrighted, the articles would be in public domain.
