Have Ireland, Chile, Vietnam, and Ghana improved their poverty situation?

According to the UN World Food Programme, these 4 have moved out of the "hunger-poverty trap" but I wonder how true that is. And if it is true, then how can other regions or countries do the same?

  1. Yes.  Dramatic improvements.

Free markets.  Crack down on corruption.  Functioning legal system.

  2. I can't speak for the others, but Ireland now has one of the best economies in Western Europe today.

  3. Clopha, Ireland is one of the richest countries in the world!  Its GDP per capita ($45,600) is higher than the US and 40% higher than any of the big four EU economies.  If the Irish are poor, most of the rest of the world must be starving!  See

    https://www.cia.gov/library/publications...

Ghana; it is still a poor country but not as bad as many African countries.  The economy seems to be undergoing fair growth, but debt is a problem.

Chile; I don't really know much about it.   Stats are apparently

GDP - real growth rate: 5.2% (2007 est.)

GDP - per capita (PPP): $14,400 (2007 est.)

Vietanm; a poor country, but the economy is growing, and I think things are improving.

  4. Ireland is doing quite nicely. The others have problems.

Perhaps it's something to do with the Guinness.

  5. Can't speak for the others, but I'm in Ireland here.  The country is currently among the richest in the EU.  Ireland was quite economically depressed  by comparison to the US or UK 20 years ago, with widespread emigration. It wasn't third-world though.   And certainly it's quite a while since Ireland had a 'hunger situation'!  The days of people starving are gone since the mid-nineteenth century!  So definitely we '  "moved out of the "hunger-poverty" trap" ', as you put it, quite a long time ago....

Your extra qs; answered 1 on the other question you posted.  The second, yes we can learn that we don't want ot go back to where we were in 1850.

  6. Vietnam is improving economically  while Chile and Ghana are not certain with its plans.

  7. The WFP is doing this "fill the cup" campaign and "free rice" online game.

All cute, but your focus on countries learning from success stories is good.

Maybe a famous actress or actor would also draw some attention as well.

Does Vietnam or Chile or Ghana have a famous movie-star type who could visit Ireland?

    Check with the embassies?

    Check with Disney?

  8. All those nations you mentioned are getting Richer. I think Ghana and Vietnam have the highest percentages of economic growth in the world between 6-8%.
