  1. In the USA, in terms of discipline and respect, they have deteriorated badly. But then the whole culture has deteriorated in those areas, too. The foundation for older schools in America was the Bible. The philosophy of education was to teach kids to become responsible adults. Today in America, the educational system is geared toward measuring everything and as a result, the students have to endure endless testing of what some committee deems important facts.

Despite this, some schools are still excellent and produce kids who love to learn and are proficient at their studies. It's hard to look back into history and measure what was better or worse, because different times require different strategies.
