What does it feel like? I was watching a commercial for British Columbia and they showed this guy skating on a frozen lake, by himself at sunset. It looked amazing and I wanted to know if it feels special?

  1. its really unusual for entire lakes to have good skating ice like they show in that promo piece. .  Normally when they freeze when there is any wind at all they will have too many dents and ridges and snow ground in to make them skatable.  More common is people will break thru the ice and flood a small rink sized spot of the surface with fresh water which will freeze overnite into good ice.

But yes its pretty cool when the conditions are exactly right and lakes freeze like that,

  2. A frozen lagoon, yes. Nothing like natural ice to skate on when it's good, but like freeside said, it's hard to find some that's skateable since it's usually lumpy, covered in snow or has sticks stuck in it to trip you up. Good 'natural' skating areas usually have a little help from people.

  3. Yes, a number of times.  I was in grade school.  Much of the romance escaped me.

  4. It's always a good idea to have someone around to pull you out if you hit a soft patch.

    Sorry.....
