  11. Kidney stones.  I didn't know what it was and I was away from home. It was so sudden and so totally overwhelming.  I honestly thought I was going to die or, at the very least, end up disabled and kept alive by machines with tubes going in and out of me.  It was so severe I could not imagine ever getting over it.  Once I found out what it was and got hospital treatment the world slowly returned to normal but the experience will always be with me.  It changes your outlook on life and on risk.

Footnote:  They weren't even big or serious kidney stones.  They certainly FELT serious.

  12. Someone tried to kill me once, by hitting me over the head with a tyre lever.  I was quite messed up for a few months after that and I made some bad decision, but I wouldn't say it changed my life in the long run, fortunately.
