Have a 1999 Dodge Durango everything i hit the gas this squeaking noise do i need to change my sepentine belt?

Its not hard to turn when I cut the car on you can hear the squeaking noise and when i press on gas and Im driving you can hear it.

  1. When a car gets very old it happens yo should tighten the sepentine belt of your car


  2. Not necessarily.  There should be a bolt to tighten a pulley that will pull the belt tighter.  

  3. It's not the belt, but if you let the problem go it will destroy the belt.

    It's probably the air conditioning compressor.  The clutch is siezed and the compressor is worn out and getting harder and harder to turn.

    If you want to get by cheaply, get a used one from a wrecking yard (car-part.com) and slap it in, but you won't have air conditioning unless you get into an AC shop to do the freon evac and recharge.  

    I would be very surprised if (as Chris R suggests) if you have a 'bolt to tighten the belt' as most serpentine belts are tensioned by a spring.
