  1. Ok, a 2002 Mercury two stroke in Oil Injected.  You don't need to mix the oil and gas like the gentleman with the Mariner.  Also, this motor is what Mercury calls a "two plus two" motor.  This means when you drop below 1800 rpm's the motor drops to two cylinders (it's a 4 cylinder engine).  This is great if you want to "troll" for fish or just to go slow.  Now the down side is that there is a SLIGHT delay inbetween going from two to four cylinders.  It's not huge but you will notice it a little when taking off.  They have had this technology since the late 80's on this motor so don't worry about dependability.

How do I know?  I have been around boats for 28 years, and have sold Mercury's and been to their training every year since 2000.

  2. Merc's rock! Super easy to work on, reliable and stand up to the abuse quite well. Just make sure you change the impeller every year or two.

  3. I have a 115 mercury mariner 2 stroke on a ski boat. it ran wonderful for the first 25 years then the brushes on the starter gave us some trouble. Its only a hassle to mix oil and gas every time to fill up.
