maybe biden could go then obama could attempt to give proof to what has so far just been lip service abt change and get someone who hasn't spent 35 years in washington, and is as much of a washington insider as those very politicians obama claimed to be different from

Yes.  In 1972,  Geroge McGovern nominated Thomas Eagleton as his running mate.  After stories about his having recieved electroshock shock therapy for depression, he withdrew from the race, and McGovern selected Sargeant Shriver (Maria's father) to replace him.
