The following is the 1st sentence from the Wikipedia entry on "President of the United States of America"

"The President of the United States of America is the head of state and head of government of the United States and is the highest political office in United States by influence and recognition."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States

The last part of the article, saying "...the highest political office in United States by..."

Is that correct? or should it be "...the highest political office in THE United States by..."

Confused,,,(I'm an ESL student)

  1. It's definitely "the United States". You were absolutely right to ask this question. It must be a typo from the person who wrote the article. Everyone makes mistakes, even the best... :)

  2. "the United States"

it doesn't sound right without the "the"

  3. You're right.  That definite article should definitely be there!  In addition, the sentence has some faulty predication.  The President is a person, not an office.

  4. Actually, you're correct. "The" should be there. It's understandable and somewhat correct, but it sounds awkward.

    Hope that helps.
