Have an old PII...would Win XP be too heavy for it? ?

Beside this comp, I have an old PII, 266mHz, 256mb of RAM, ATI Rage IIC and the Sound Blaster 16 P&P.

Would like to upgrade it to Win XP (currently, that comp runs Win98 SE), but I'm afraid it would be too "heavy" for this configuration and it would slow that comp...is it and would it? I mainly use that computer in cases I need two computers, but have some old (and dear) games and software installed, also DSL internet (like with this one). Would anything suffer if I change to XP?

  1. People have different levels of what they consider "acceptable" performance from a computer. I've put XP on a similarly aged computer (a Celeron 333) that I had upgraded to 256 MB of RAM and a larger and faster hard drive. I found the performance acceptable.

Games will probably suffer regardless of the actual performance of the computer: many older games, such as Streets of SimCity, do not run well under XP or newer.
