  2. At Texas A&M, when I was a grad student there, we had a son of Doc Bar in the stallion roster.  I can't remember his name, it's been a long time, but he was a pretty nice horse.  He was donated to A&M because he was a ridgeling (he had one t******e that had failed to descend from the abdominal cavity into the s*****m), but Dr. Gary Potter (head of the A&M horse program) had this to say about him:  "He's a better stallion with one ball than a lot of 'em are with two!"

I've never ridden any cutting horses, but I've watched people ride them and gone to a couple of clinics that were given by Sheila Varian of Varian Arabians.  She's done a lot of training of Arabian cutting horse champions and has won with Arabs against Quarter Horses in open cutting competitions.  It's amazing to watch a good cutting horse at work-- almost like magic.

Doc Bar and his descendants are among the most influential cutting horse sires.  From what I've seen, cutting horses have to have real athletic ability in terms of agility and speed from stop to start and back to stop again, ability to turn on a dime and give you a nickel back in change, and a really sharp mind.  I've heard that the best cutters can actually turn right out from under their riders as they block the cow they've cut from the herd.

I really enjoy watching cutting competitions, but it's like everything else in the horse show world-- it has its politics, and at the highest levels, it takes lots and lots and lots of work and lots of money to be competitive.  But the cutting horses are truly awesome animals.

  3. Yes, I have & no, it doesn't.

  4. Cutting horses are an absolute thrill to ride.  Wonderful experience!

Doc Bar is one of the most influential sires of cutting horses.  He passed 'cow sense' and athletic ability on to his foals, and even today, many of his descendants have a 'Doc Bar head'.  (My mare does).

Other influential sires of cutting horses in the industry today are Peptoboonsmal, Dual Rey, Dual Pep, Smart Little Lena, and Peppy San Badger.
