  1. We call at random. Most of the time it's a blind call meaning we have no information on you except for your name, number, and address. Your grades don't play a role in this thing. I signed up a guy just recently who had a 3.9 GPA and 6 college scholarships (4 for baseball, and 2 for football). He decided to the Army with an Airborne Ranger contract.

  2. Yea. It's called telemarketing lol

  3. Nope...never called by a recruiter.

I talked to a couple of them. But wasn't sure if I cold believe everything they said.

So I did some homework on my own... this was a little before the internet. I talked to a few guys from bases in the area and decided on the Navy. I had average grades... well, a tad above average a little over 3.0. I was attending a city college (community college) because I really didn't know what I wanted to do. With an AA degree they let me graduate from boot camp as an E-3. I'm not sure what I was in boot camp... I think we were all considered recruits.

All recruiters do is try to find people who want to join. I've talked to a few of them in the last few years... just to get a feel for how everything is going. If they think there's a chance of getting you in, they will pester you to a point. But it costs money to do so. If you flat out tell them to take a hike and not to pester you, they pretty much have to do just that. They might tell you that you probably weren't up to their standards anyway, but that they just wanted to give you a chance. But they shouldn't bother you. If a specific recruiter continue to do so, get his/her name and call the officer in charge of Recruiting in your area. Explain you realize they have a job to do, but that you've informed (so and so) on (such and such a date) that you're not interested at present and that you consider the continued attempts to contact you bordering on harassment. You might explain that if you decide to enter the service at a future date, you will contact the recruiter.

  4. Soon as I turned 17 I got flooded with mail from every service and had a call almost every week from every service(excluding coast guard).I guess putting down military on those school surveys pegs you on top of the list eh.

  5. dont sweat it dude. i served 8 yrs in the marine corps and after i had been out for about 10 yrs i got a card in the mail telling me i failed to register for the draft! the government doesnt know their a$$ from a hole in the ground

  6. They really try to reach everybody. Think about it, if you are a kid on a full ride at a university, what does a recruiter have to offer you other than adventure (which is finding a party on Saturday night) and service to country (which most people you age don't give a $hit about anyway). Someone in your situation might be interested in adventure, pay and having a full ride (or close to it) when you come home. I was a recruiter, and I did real well calling the folks that went away to college after the first semester, and the first year. Believe it or not, some people need a break from the books and want to grow up...fast. Seriously, having the Army on your resume will get you a lot more points than membership in I Tappa Kegga.

  7. If you're interested, talk to all different branches and know, going in, what type of job you're interested in.  See which branch is the best fit for you.

If you're not interested, tell them nicely not to call you back... and they won't.

  8. Beleive it or not, you're information is given to recruiters.  Not directly, but they get it from laws that allow for the solicitation from colleges and recruiters, this includes army recruiters.

That said, they're called "Lead Refinement Lists" which are lists of everyone in your school from Freshman to Senior.  We know how well you're doing from school visits and speaking with counselors.  Believe me, you're pegged sometimes way before getting the call.

I was a recruiter for quite a while.  I got the calls too as a kid and made them as a recruiter.

The lists are also alphabetical (if that matters) but we can pick and choose whoever we want to call.  That's random I suppose.

For SHAWN above:  Was he a call in?  :)

  9. JOIN THE MARINES :) BE A MAN

    Sgt. Bell, Brian e.

    Wounded in Iraq

    Wounded Warrior Bn- East

  10. YES they call you randomly. Just tell them you're not interested. The colleges send out your information to the recruiters. not to mention, you filled out the selective service card when you were 18. They knew right when to call you.

  11. When I was on recruiter's assistance after Marine Combat Training last year in December, I also called the phone numbers of high school graduates, and those soon to be graduating. The way it works is, the recruiters have a list of all of the seniors at your high school, they go down the list and call EVERY number on it. Those friends of yours who claimed never to have received a phone call from a recruiter probably had their parents answer for them, where their typical response would be "My son/daughter is not joining the military! STOP CALLING!", add some extra disgust in the thought and there you go. The student themselves may never know, and may have missed the opportunity to serve their country. Everyone is called at one point or another, even those who claim to be going to college, their names are saved and they are called again in a year. Hope that helps
