In the war they planed to make an aircraft carrier of ice with freezer to keep it solid. Remember the Titanic sank the iceberg didn't

  1. As strange as it sounds there was a great deal of excitement during the WW2 about this. Churchill was very positive that not old could it be done but that it would provide the British navy with the edge they required to win the war.

With the addition of ground up wood pulp, piecreat as it became know is very stable to heat melting and is more impact resistant than concrete.

Unfortunately the war moved on fast and the requirement for this technology slipped away.

    Ja.

  2. Gosh, those airplanes would need some exact sling- shot stoppers on deck  for this endeavor!

  3. Yes - trial ships were made for project Habakkuk - the ice carrier you refer to.

  4. they made one in Panama, by the time it was finished it was 98% smaller than what it started out as.

  5. Don't suppose it would be much use today eh ?

most conflicts seems to be in hot countries - Vietnam, Cuba, Sudan, Middle east.......

  6. no..there were plans, but was never done

  7. there was a documentary on discovery about this i am pretty sure it was the sea hunters they dived onto what was part of the skeleton of this ice ship check out the sea hunter web site if of course they have one

  8. This is a real cuckoo of an idea!

Ice is only slightly more bouyant than water. What you see above the water is supported by 8 times that amount below the water. If you made an aircraft carrier from ice, it would have to as almost as deep as it is long. The power needed to push it through the water would be phenomenal.

The U.S.S. Oriskany that was just sunk off Pensacola to be a man-made reef was 270 metres long and had a flight deck just under 30 metres from the sea (has to that high so large waves do not sweep the flight deck and make it unusable for aircraft).

Therefore your ice aircraft carrier would have to extend 240 metres below the surface (limiting its use in shallow seas somewhat!!). Nevermind the crew who would have a real problem in heating their accommodation and preparing their food without putting their ship at risk!!

  9. The Habakkuk was supposed to be the great floating indestructible aircraft carrier, but didn't go so well here are some links you can read up on. Enjoy :)

  10. Your logic.... but do you may have a point!!... if an iceberg can sink a ship... therefore , a ship made of ice cannot sink.. very , very doubtful indeed.

  11. Yes, but the toilets were always a problem.

  12. would it not melt?

  13. Actually no, it will take a lot of fuel to keep it. Thats impossible.
