  1. Are you ridding english or western ?

If english start with a walk then a trot , you must learn to ride at a post and at a siting trot

Then comes the canter ,which actually is easier, But you must be centered and have a LONG LEG meaning lengthen your leg

meaning Lengthen your leg a bit and sit lighter in the saddle and get with the rytheme of the horse,

If you have not work with out he first ones then you need to start ,from the begining

Most people want to cruel up  their knees  get higher and higher

Dont do that ,,,Get a longer leg,  use the inside of your calf .toes out sightly  and heels way down and a nice seat not to deep ,, later you can get deeper in the seat when you need to push the horse forward for now you need balance so sit a bit lighter

start in a small round pen  some trainers like me have you close your eyes and think about the rhythm of the horse

you should also learn with no reins ,, Yep have trust in your self

  2. trotting without stirrups is harder than cantering without them.

canter with long stirrups so u can gradually stop relying on them. keep making them longer until u do not need them at all. you might want to do this while someone is lunging you but u dont need to. while u are cantering/trotting try and feel the rhythm with ur seat and move ur bottom with it, this will keep u steady.

  3. start with a slow canter or a fast trot if a fast trot then get up to a slow canter. hold ypur legs tight but not to tight so you dont make the horse go faster. try on a lunge line at first so you dont really have to worry about controlling the horse.

  4. Oh I love cantering without stirrups and preferably bareback. What I would try focusing on is have someone lunge you while riding. That way you don't have to focus on steering and controlling the horse, your main goal should be on moving with the horse.Keep a firm but relaxed leg and grip with your thighs.A common problem while cantering without strirups is that the rider is so used to incrorrectly using their feet in the stirrups that they stop relying on their legs for balance.

Hope this helps and happy riding

  5. Do you feel really secure at posting the trot without stirrups?  It's important that you have the leg strength and balance so that you can easily posting trot without stirrups and can canter normally.  When you do try to canter without stirrups, keep your weight back down in your seat, keep your heels down, keep a bend in your knee, and don't let your leg get behind you.  It's hard to say more without seeing you ride or knowing what exactly you're having trouble with.  Maybe you could have someone lunge your horse while you try to canter without stirrups so you can focus on sitting back and staying centered over the horse.
