Question:

Have anyone ever had their ticket checked on their train ride to work?

I take a train to work everyday in Toronto, Canada. I have yet, to date, ever once had my train ticket checked. I don't mind paying, but it makes me laugh realizing I've paid $100's on tickets and never had it checked before.

  1. Yes, on  trains in Scotland, the conductor will check you ticket almost all the time. As well as ticket checks, there are also ticket barriers but only at main stations.

  2. Yes, I sometimes take Long Island Railroad, Metro-North Railroad in New York, New Jersey Transit Commuter Rails, River Line, Hudson-Bergen Lightrail in New Jersey, and SEPTA Regional Rail.

    Conductors always check.

On the River Line and Hudson-Bergen Lightrail, New Jersey Transit Law Enforcement check ticket to make sure one way ticket or ten-trip passes are valided.

  3. Yes... I commute daily on Caltrain in the San Francisco area, and I've had my ticket checked at least once a week over the last 10 years.

I also make a monthly trip on ACE from San Jose to Stockton, and then ALWAYS check everyone's ticket.

It may make you laugh to have spent that money... but what would make you CRY would be the $250 dollar fine they charge in California... plus if you TOUCH the conductor or yell at them... they tack on an assault charge for another $500 and a possible 90 days in jail.

Is NOT paying the $2 - 5 for your ticket worth being a criminal.

  4. on metro north they check almost every day.

  5. Yes.

  6. I commuted on the GO Train for years and yes they do check tickets quite often.

That you have not been checked yet is just luck, where you sit on the train (they usually start at one end and go through to the other), how many people are on the train (how many tickets they have to check) and how many stops you go (whether they get to your car before you get off).

The fine is very heavy for not having a valid ticket and goes against your car license so you can't renew your license until the ticket is paid, not worth taking the chance.  It's only about $5-$10 a trip depending on where you take the train from/to, cheaper than the alternatives & cheaper than parking.
