  1. Yes there are DC motors which run directly off Solar power.

    10 hp is apprx. 10 * 746 = 7460 Watts

Solar panels have a peak wattage of about 15 W /sqfoot

so for 7460 watts you will need 7460 / 15 = 497 sq ft of solar panels, pretty expensive.

Just search for Solar DC motors on google you will get lots of links.

  2. Its very easy to find a 10HP dc motor to run directly off solar panels. Go to any of the motor manufacturers. GE, Siemens, ABB, Marathon, Beldor, Weg etc etc etc.

Finding the solar panels may be tough.

  3. Sure, if you have about 2 acres of solar panels...

A 10hp motor *will not* run directly from solar panels. It will be an AC motor, so you will also need a battery bank and inverter.

    10hp = 7.46kW

A *big* solar panel will produce roughly 100W (12V) in bright sunshine. You can do the maths from there.

  4. You will not be able to carry the panels as they will be too large (see other answerers' responses).

The trick is to store the energy in a battery of sorts over time and then release it more quickly than it is gathered.  Since metal or lithium-based batteries produce pollution when created and dumped, the ultimate alternative is a battery that stores energy in the form of compressed air as used for power in the Air Car (IE http://www.theaircar.com)

497 square feet (to get the power) * 1/8 (8 hours per day) =  62 square feet, which should not be too mind bogglingly expensive...it will produce 10 horsepower for up to 1 hour (IE from those 8 hours of charging) that way with true zero emissions.

  5. It depends a great deal on what you're doing with the motor.

    A place for DC motors.

Note that DC motor horsepower is nothing like gas engine horsepower.  The large motor, rated at 20-28 hp... there are two of those motors in this drag racer

a Mazda RX-7 which does 11.03 in the quarter mile. Yes, seconds :)

  6. Now the first question is, why do you need a 10 h.p. motor?

Is it for the torque, r.p.m.s why 10?

Don't forget, electric motors are just like any other and to get the most from the least you can also run it through a gearbox.

  7. to answer your question it will be almost impossible  solar panels are not very powerful  at all it would take hundreds of solar panels and even then the power would never be continuos
