  1. Not much you can do when you book a package deal like that. Never book a package deal. Always book seperately at least you have a better chance of changing things. Live and learn I guess. Even if you bought the insurance option they would want all kinds of proof for a payout. Why can't you have an extra seat on the plane... it's paid for? When it comes time to print the bording passes just go ahead and print the one not going. That will get you the seat you need though it will be empty.

  2. Read their policies on cancellations very carefully. Never take no for the first or second answer. Call them direct and if they give you a run around, ask to speak to a manager. If you're at the casino, ask to speak to a manager right at the front desk and explain your problem. Often, they will resolve it and refund the money or part of it. No one wants an unhappy customer or a scene.

  3. If you read the "fine print" when you booked with Expedia, there was probably a statement such as "non-refundable, non-transferable" meaning if one or all persons in your party cannot make the trip there can be no refunds and you cannot change any persons in your party.  Travel packages are merely multiple components (air, hotel, car rental) which are booked together at one discounted price.  Even though you paid one price, each component usually has some value.  Since hotel accommodations are usually based on double-occupancy, one person not traveling with you will not affect that component nor will there be any residual value that can be used at a later time.  However, the air fare is ticketed under each person's name so therefore the person not traveling with you will have the value of the fare to use for one year.  There will be a re-issue fee, which on Northwest Airlines is $150, and when the travel is re-booked if there is a difference in fare that will need to be paid as well.  The ticket is still non-transferable, however, so only the person who is not traveling with you to Las Vegas will be able to use it.  Since the ticket is completely un-used they do not necessarily have to use it to go to Vegas.  They can apply the value of the ticket towards travel anywhere Northwest Airlines flies.  Make sure to ask either Expedia or Northwest Airlines for the ticket number assigned to the person not traveling with you so they can easily reference it when you re-book.

  4. Unfortunately, the answers given to you by Northwest and Expedia are correct.  Most airfare included in packages (especially in the US) is non-refundable and non-transferrable.  You may with to contact the airline or Expedia to see whether there is any residual value remaining if that extra ticket is cancelled, but that value may remain in the name of the person who is not going.

  5. I know the feeling.  But that ticket for that specific person is good for one year with a fee for change of flight, about $75
