i have a female chihuahua who is almost 1 yr. old (i dont want to get her fixed cause i want to breed her at least once). I am a single mom at the moment and have been considering getting a pitt bull to protect me and my home (i have been robbed in the past). if i decide to go ahead with this would i be best to get a male and get him fixed? also my brother lives next door to me he has a american bull dog who has already shown can be very agressive toward dogs of her own size (shes never bothered the chihuahua) considering my bothers dog as well as they will potentially see and have access to one another (my bros dog is female and is in the process of being fixed)... what s*x should i choose and anyone advice me against this (my child is 5 but very very good with animals, none of the teasing or aggravating more or less ignors them or might only pet them)

  1. If you are looking fora  guard dog, you would be better off to get a German Shepherd or something.

Depending on your chihuahua, some don't like big dogs and are a one dog household type animal, some are a little more easy going : )

  2. my friend has a pit bull red nose... two chiuauas, jack russel mix, dashhound.and they all get aling great and all of them stays in the house but they did have a few miss haps but they dont know if it was her or their daughters dog so when they go out they are supervised and not left together when they are gone........

  3. Do NOT breed your chihuahua! They usually end up needing c-sections, which are VERY expensive! You'll likely lose your dog, and the whole litter of pups.

Do NOT get a pit bull for a gaurd dog, they are NOT good at gaurding. They are usually so friendly, and love everyone. (Unless neglected like your brother's dog sounds like. A. Bulldogs are not usually agressive either!)

Dogs are not a security system, they are family members.

Chihuahuas are actually better gaurd dogs than any other breed-- they were specifically bred in Mexico for being gaurd dogs!!!

  4. I use to have multiple pitt bulls growing up.  They are the most loving and loyal dogs I have came to know. It is all about the owner and how they want to bring up the animal. From day one, when my female pitt had pups, we handled them and let them smell us everyday.  They need to get accustomed to humans.  I wouldn't suggest the agressive one from your brother. For some reason (what I have seen) they can become agressive towards your child due to your son posing a threat instead of being alpha dog.  I would suggest you either get a puppy from the shelter or get a puppy from a friend. Then that puppy can grow up being accostomed to the child and chihuahua.

  5. I have 3 pit bulls and the most they would do is l**k a robber to death. I have 9 dogs all together and two are Jack russell puppies my 3 pits LOVE the puppies. I also have two children (3 and 7) my 3 pits adore them. The only thing i would worry about is your brothers dog if she doesn't like other dogs. If they got into a fight it could be a bloody mess. My neighbor has a dog-aggressive chow chow that JUMPED our 7ft fence to attack bruno (one of our pits) we had to spray them both with a hose and pull them apart. I was shaking so bad after that and ive never seen bruno behave like that but it wasnt his fault because the chow chow attacked him but besides that i think an American pitbull terrier would be the best dog with kids and another dog.

  6. Buying dogs for Guarding is not a good idea. If you NEVER OWNED a Pittbull or a bully breed before, or been around one other than your brothers American. I suggest you do not get  a APBT. With out the proper knowledge of breed lineage you are likely to go out an buy the cheapest most available Pitt pup which means they come from bad breeders that did not research the lineage and didn't breed dogs that are prone to aggression. Being a single mom and having a young child, and a dog, you will not have time to properly train this dog to be a good guard dog. Besides now adays if you dog attacked a burglar and did harm YOU will be the one paying and the dog euthanized. Pittbulls are not for people, not willing to do the proper training. Having a Un-spayed female dog in the house with a male pitt is a accident waiting to happen. Even if you neuter the male, the smell of a female in heat will make him a bit crazy and hard to handle. Its best to just keep the Chi... as others have said before, its not needed to let your Chi have puppies. There are enough and if you have not had the dog 100% health checked and temperament tested, if she is not a good ambassador of her breed standard, and she is not of proper age and size (meaning teacups) she should never be bred. As someone stated before Chi's make great doorbells and people catchers. Less damage is done too if they decided to bite.

  7. My friends used to live down in Alabama and bred pit bulls. They were robbed three times, no sign of the dogs doing anything about it. You are better off with a rottweiler.

  8. Some Pitbulls can be very sweet gentle dogs but you always run the risk of getting an aggressive dog in certain breeds. I wouldn't recommend getting a Pitbull with small children around. My friends son is very good with animals and he lost the top half of his ear to a normally very friendly Pitbull at the age of five. Some dogs also like to play rough with other dogs so you run the risk of a Pitbull accidentally killing the chihuahua. There are many other breeds that make great watch dogs but are also good family dogs such as a German Shepherd.

  9. Here's from the UKC site--

The essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.  http://www.ukcdogs.com/WebSite.nsf/Breed...

Get a security system, not a dog!

My 2 year old pittie is afraid of my MIL's shih tzu's.... If that tells you anything!

AND, PLEASE re-think breeding your chihuahua! Especially being a single mother, you will never have time to whelp a litter of puppies! You will need to be home every 2-3 hours at first. (I have been a single mom!) And, breeding is SO expensive. You will end up in debt, and NOT make any money from the pups.

Here's some sites on breeding to consider. Please look at them all thoroughly before deciding to breed.

  10. I have nothing whatsoever against Pit Bulls, but I don't think it is the right breed to have with other SMALL animals. Some have a high prey drive and might see your Chi as a moving squeak toy to go play with, and thats not something I would want to take a chance on. Also, any dog that barks is going to be a deterrent to intruders. They don't want to mess with a house that draws attention when they can just as easily move along to another, more quiet home to mess with.

Dogs are not good to use as protection. They just aren't. Training a dog to protect you always seems to end badly. Your boyfriend comes home late and gets attacked because he startled the sleeping dog, or someone approaches you from behind and the dog turns and attacks. The chances of the dog attacking the RIGHT person are so slim, thats its not worth the risk to you, your family or others. You might end up having to put the dog down, or get sued for all you have when the dog attacks the wrong person.

High quality alarm system is the way to go. And please get your Chi spayed.

  11. I had a un neutered male chihuahua, who we had long before we got our pitt from the pound...the pitt was fixed,,,the two were best friends...until chi got out and was attacked by neighbor dog...and killed. needless to say when our pit saw that dog again (neighbor dog),,he beat the c**p out of him...but ya..i think the same gender with at least one of them fixed would be fine..
