Have found a nest of bees underground?

my questions are:

if you don't wish to harm the bees, how do you deal with this? we cannot simply leave them, as young children nearby and the bee activity is at ground level.

do we need to call out or is there something we can do, like use smoke or something else to get them to look for a home elsewhere? sorry, i simply know nothing about dealing with this and the internet search did not prove very useful.

thanks to anyone that might be able to help.

  1. Make the young children smarter by teaching them about the bees. If they are not threatened they will not sting.

  2. Okay first it's hard not to get them aggravated.  You will have to either call someone that can take care of them or stay about 10 or so feet away on all sides.  They are very sensitive to motion and little children playing can disturb them.  I would hate to see some one get stung.

  3. You do know that bee populations are disappearing and that bees are an extremely important part of the ecosystem and without them we would not have most of the foods that we eat.  Are you aware that scientists are working hard to figure out how to save the bees, so that we will still have food to eat.  There is NO need to kill them like many people are suggesting.  You can call a professional who will relocate them, without harming or killing them.  Please read more below:

  4. We had an underground nest of yellowjackets. My husband ran over it with a lawnmower and got stung in several places.  He came inside and told me he was feeling a bit weird. It quickly progressed into anaphylactic shock and I had to call 911. After several years or treatment with a doctor who specializes in allergies, he now feels comfortable enough not to run around with an epi pen.

I poured gasoline down that hole and torched it, because smoking them out would not cause them to move permanently. It was a serious matter of self defence.

  5. It would be nice if we could live with all other creatures without harming them, but we can not.  For your children's safety you must destroy the nest.  Doing it without harming the wasps/bees is unlikely.  As suggested do it after dark when the wasps/bees are inactive.  Usually they build their nest under something.  It could be a wall, sidewalk or just a rock underground(this protects the nest from rain).  Whatever you use must get under that protection.  The nest may be just a short distance from the hole.

If you want to see how large a colony, just find a spot nearby where you can watch the hole.  They will start coming home about 30 minutes before dark and all will be home by dark.

You can try digging them out, but even at night they will come out and defend the nest.  Gasoline or diesel will destroy the nest if you can get it in there.  You can soak the ground around the hole but you don't want to pollute so use sparingly.  Pesticides will not do much good if you can not get in on the wasps/bees.  If all else fails, try a strong stream from a water hose and blast away at the entrance site from some distance away.  If the nest is well protected they will just build a new entrance.  But if it is not they will relocate.

  6. If you are going to Nuke 'em, do it at night when they are all in the nest. Cover first with Mozzie net so you can check later for life, then "bomb" them with a canister of cockroach/flea killer under an impervious membrane. Should wipe them out.
