Have found parasitic ring worms in the supermarket fish?

Two days ago I went to the shop to get some fish from the counter. I decided to buy herrings and mackerel. I put them in the freezer till yesterday. It is a little bit easier for me to clean this type of fish if it is slightly frozen. So, while I was cleaning the mackerel guts there were these parasites. I felt totally disgusted. Usually when I deal with meat and fish I put gloves on. This time I did not and then later noticed I had a little cut on my finger. Had to bin evrything as a result.

I phoned to the shop but they asked me to come over (30 min walk). I sent them an email and awaiting for their reply.

Feel very disgusted and this discovery has put me off mackerel for some time if not for long.

I know that it is possible to find ring worms in the fish but you do not want to find them. Also I pregnant and it makes me even more worried. I tried to wash my hands well and the washing basin as well. I am not telling you which store cos my question will be deleted, you know it.

  1. Gross. Maybe you should name the store to help prevent people from giving money to a store that obviously doesn't care about their consumers enough to make sure the fish is good to eat.


  2. I guess if the fish was whole (including guts etc) then it would be hard for the shop to know it contained parasites.  On the other had if it had already been gutted and these had been missed that is totally unacceptable.  

    Either way, the way the store has handled your complaint is wrong.  They should have done more to make you feel they cared about you (their customer).   I don't know too much about parasitic worms in fish, but you should phone your local hospital or GP and check with them just to put your mind a ease.  I am sure you can't catch anything, even through a cut, but I would check anyway.

    Continue with your complaint at the store and make sure you take it to the highest level.  Just bare in mind that if there was no way of them knowing about the worms then there would have been little they could do to prevent it.

  3. whatever you found in the fish - they were NOT ring worms.

    Ring worm is actually a fungal skin infection, commonly found on horses and can be passed to humans, it is not an intestinal parasite of fish.

    I'm curious to know exactly what they looked like, and how you identified them as being parasitic worms?  Do you have a parasitology degree?

    Anyways, parasitic worms are common in all animals which we eat - if you removed the intestines, cleaned the fish and then cooked it properly it would pose no risk to your health.

  4. Well, I can't even imagine buying fish that hasn't been properly cleaned for the customer much less me freezing it at home that way. Uncleaned fish spoils much faster then cleaned fish.

    But if the shop is selling whole uncleaned fish... you can hardly expect them to know if a fish has worms or anything else that can only be seen when a fish has been cleaned.

    If you couldn't see signs of worms when you bought the fish uncleaned...how could they have?

    If you are pregnant and concerned about such things...don't buy or handle uncleaned fish without gloves. After you give birth you will have the rest of your life to take such health risks

  5. These round worms are quite common in the guts of live mackerel and cod, and most fish which is gutted before sale won't contain any worms. But with whole fish, the worms will still be in the guts when you buy the fish and will eventually migrate through the gut wall into the flesh. If you found them outside the guts perhaps the supermarket should think about how long it keeps un-gutted fish on sale, but apart from that it's not really the shop's fault that the worms are there.

  7. It's not pleasant, but it's perfectly natural. Fish have parasitic worms. You can even find little straight ones deep in the muscles, so no amount of gutting and cleaning is going to get those. They are obviously as dead as the fish, even before cooking, so pose no health risk whatsoever. I'm sorry, but you just have to look on them as free extra protein!

  8. that must av been some really bad **** fish u got, if i was you i would report the whole salers were you got it from, i wont ever be eatin that type of fish ,miind you i dont really like that sort of fish.
