Have I found a Meteorite?

I found this rock about 15 years ago when it suddenly appeared in my yard and have done some tests on it. It does not attract a magnet, its streak is reddish on a white tile. It has smooth surfaces. I found iron particles around where I found it. It is about the size of a cantaloupe fruit and it weighs around 10 lbs.

Here are some pics...

  1. could be...

i forget what they're called, but there's people who will verify whether it's from earth or space....

  2. I would take the rock to a local rock club and have them look at the rock first and see if they have any clue what kind of rock it could be, meteorites look like a ton of other rocks and are often overlooked by the untrained eye but i'm sure a rock hound would be able to tell what it is for sure.

  3. You should ask your neighbour to stop throwing magnetized rocks into your yard while your sleeping.

  4. Well, that is a very interesting looking rock.

When you found it, was there any kind of crater? To my mind, I would expect an object that large hitting the ground at great velocity to have left some kind of hole in the ground. If you found it just lying around on unscorched grass, then I would guess it is not a meteorite.

Also, when a meteorite is falling through the atmosphere, it would be tumbling, and the friction of the descent should probably result in a rock that is more rounded than yours is.

But it's a very nice rock, nevertheless.

  5. A rock of that size would have left a very noticeable crater. I would take it to a specialist and have them examine the rock... we can't really tell just from pictures.
