  1. Assuming that you cannot work for any number of reasons, the next best option would be to save money before the operation if the operation can be delayed for any length of time. You may need to consider ways to cut back on expenses, especially those that might be considered discretionary such as entertainment, alcohol, tobacco, etc.

  2. Usually jobs offer short term disability for these situations. Your husband should check with his Human Resource Office at his employer to see whats available to him.

Also, if your husband has sick/vacation time accrued, he should still get paid even if he's out of work.

  3. If the surgery is prohibiting you from working outside of the home, and he can't work, you should contact the hospitals/physicians who are treating and ask for assistance on the copays, etc...

If you need food, there are several pantries that will provide food to people "no questions asked" for free or a greatly reduced fee (see this link for Second Harvest:  http://www.secondharvest.org/)

Contact your creditors/landlord/etc and let them know that you may need to pay a reduced amount or defer some of your payments and ask them about their policies for people who are temporarily not able to pay.  Some of the people you'll talk to will be nasty and won't want to help, but you have to push past the negativity and explain that you are trying to help/ deal with this in the best possible way.

Some churches will help families who need temporary assistance or loans too.

Good luck - I'm currently recovering from reconstructive surgery on my knee & ankle and rehab isn't pretty...

  4. If you have no income, that means you probably don't work.  If you need income, you need a job.  The fastest way to get income is to sign up with 3 or 4 temporary agencies (they send you out on temp jobs that last from 1 day to a few weeks and everything in between).  Then call each one of them every morning to see if there are any jobs available.  That will let them know you want to work so when something does come along, they'll call you first before other applicants.  They usually pay weekly so you could have income within a week if you applied right away.

  5. Get a job? Is there something preventing you from getting a job?

IF there is some physical reason then ask for help..but if you can help yourself with a smaller income until he can work again...do that and leave the help for those that really need it.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help on a temporary basis...IF YOU NEED IT.  Even for just food...but try to get a job and help yourself as much as possible!

You might ask parents for a loan ......Just make sure you pay it back...with interest!
