  1. yes. the russians did it

  2. Yes it is true. Monkeys and chimpanzees and other animals were sent up on rockets before people were. It was a test to see if the could survive and function in space. They did and then humans followed.

  3. The very first primates ever fired to an altitude near space were the monkeys Albert 1 and Albert 2. They died in 1949 in the nose cones of captured German V-2 rockets during U.S. launch tests.

The V-2 rockets carried Air Force Aero Medical Laboratory monkeys named Albert I, II, III, and IV high in the atmosphere to see how they might withstand space conditions. All of the monkeys survived the upward trip, but were killed when parachutes failed to open and the nose cones impacted the ground.

  4. Ya. Go primates!

  5. yes

  6. I hate how people consider "monkeys" to be chimps, apes, etc.

  7. Five national space programs have flown animals into space: the United States, the Soviet Union, France, Japan and China.

There have been many different animals sent into space, the first were fruit flies aboard a U.S.-launched V2 rocket in 1947.

Albert II, a Rhesus Monkey, became the first monkey in space on June 14, 1949, in a U.S.-launched V2.

Numerous monkeys of several species were flown by the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s.

The first animal in orbit was the dog Laika, launched aboard the Soviet Sputnik 2 spacecraft on November 3, 1957.

Monkeys "Able" (a rhesus monkey) and "Baker" (a squirrel monkey) became the first monkeys to survive spaceflight after their 1959 flight.  They were launched on May 28, 1959.

On January 31, 1961, Ham (a chimpanzee) was launched.  He had been trained to pull levers to receive rewards of banana pellets.

Enos the chimp became the first non-human primate in orbit on November 29, 1961.

The United States launched the monkey Bonny, a macacque, in 1969 on the first multi-day primate mission.

In the 1980's, the Soviet Union sent 8 monkeys into space, and the US sent two aboard Spacelab 3 on the space shuttle .

  8. Yes, monkey beat man into space.

  9. Chimpanzees not monkeys, I know it is not much difference to us, but I am sure it does to them.

  10. Chimps, actually, in the early days of the American space program, before we had put a man up.
