Question:

Have my fish spawned?

I have just noticed a pinkish brown cobweb like substance with specks in it sticking onto the broad leaves of my java fern in my community tank.

Is this eggs?

I have only seen my live bearers have babies before so I'm not sure! The possible culprits are neons/cardinals/glowlights, silver dollars, danios or butterfly rams.

Could anybody please put me on the right track?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Snails - little buggers.  I have had snails, by accident from a plant i bought and they are not easy to eliminate.  Fortunately the fish do tend to eat them as they get bigger.  I cleaned my tank from top to bottom when i was trying to kill them off i even soaked all the ornaments etc in scolding hot water.  And they survived, it was eggs on the wood.  It was like slime with specks in it.  Sounds very similar to yours.  I had to go to my pet shop and buy medicine.  I cant remember the name but its also used to kill worms (overfeeding) but you will have to take your shrimps out for a period as it will also kill them.

I hope this helps and good luck with your problem.  :-(

  2. No, that doesn't sound like any fish spawning I've heard of or seen before. Do you have snails? They seem to sometimes make web-like structures on plants.
